Woodcarver
of the year 2007
|
|
Ian Edwards:
"I really like the overall movement of this carving, with the fine details
being very carefully and cleanly finished. Some of the finer detail that
interests me is where the mace hangs outside of the mount - this really does
give the illusion of movement, which this carver demonstrates the ability to
capture in his work."
"Trouble at the Castle" |
|
"Icarus" |
The judges' comments ...
Chris Pye:
"This was quite an oustanding piece
and an obvious winner in this category; the carver shows confidence and
excellent technique; passion and determination are etched on Icarus' face
and posture; the drapery and anatomy ring true but perhaps lost a little where
the arms join the body within the sleeve - I wonder if these were separately
carved? The whole is well finished. Well done!"
Ian Edwards:
"This is a very impressive carving
with lots of points of interest. It has good movement, the figure is well
proportioned and it has been cleanly carved. I like the way the wings are
attached to the hands through toggle and strap. This is a good take on the
Icarus theme. You can easily depict the determination in the mind of Icarus
through the expression on his face. This piece could be improved by the anatomy
of the face carving and the proportions around the eyes."
Stuart Lawson:
"Another remarkable example from
Peter Paces, winner of the last year's In the Round Carving category. Icarus is
proud and determined, and ready to take flight. His wings are seen in the full
splendour, contrasting with the almost uncomfortable intensity of
Icarus' expression.
The way that the base, rocks and
figure are balanced contributes greatly to the success of this carving."

"The Knockout" |
The judges' comments ...
Ian Edwards:
"This
carving really has appeal;
the carver has managed to
capture both the movement and the impact of the fight, coupled with the intense
expressions of the referee and the contestants. It really seems as though you
are viewing the fight from a ringside seat.
Knockout has also been finished to a high standard and is anatomically
correct, with good movement in the legs of the contestants receiving the blow,
right down to the movement of the material of the shorts. Areas for improvement
would be subtlety in carving the faces."
Chris Pye:
"As the striking boxer leans
forward into his punch, the referee leans back, creating a tense, triangular
space out of which, I swear, I can hear the 'thwack' of the glove meeting the
chin.
A very good design - dynamic,
engaging; entirely fitting. The faces, for me, are a little overworked (almost
bordering on caricature?) but otherwise the carving is excellent throughout -
good anatomy and showing a carver in control, right down to shirt buttons and
boot laces.
An exciting, engaging and
complicated piece of work.
Congratulations!"
Stuart Lawson:
This is such an ambitious carving
in so many ways - capturing the drama and, significantly, the distortion of a
specific moment that has produced a unique piece of work.
A large part of any figure-study's
success is how well it represents the weight of its subject, and all three of
Peter's contrasting figures communicate gravity with conviction. The distinct
nature of each character and their relationship to each other produces a very
balanced and vivid composition." |

OK, is it just me or are all of you seeing a trend
developing here. Granted, this is the International Woodcarvers Congress, but to
have someone come over all the way from England and go home with all those
well-deserved ribbons gets to be a bit much.
Peter Paces was called up to the podium so often
at the Banquet, they were going to get him a chair right up front.
